Like the last few days, the heat is no joke. Here are some tips to protect yourself.

We are looking at another hot several days this week as heat index readings will top 100 degrees. Here is some great information to help you stay safe during this run of intense weather.

We do get some relief later as the National Weather Service personnel are telling us this weekend will be around 80 with lows in the mid 60s.

Stay Safe in the Heat!

With the relentless heat expected to continue, bringing temperatures into the mid-to-upper 90s and extreme heat indexes this weekend and next week, please keep these important safety tips in mind.

1. Stay Hydrated:
*Drink plenty of water, even if you don't feel thirsty.
*Avoid sugary drinks, alcohol, and caffeine, which can dehydrate you.
*Consider sports drinks or snacks with electrolytes to replace what's lost through sweat.

2. Stay Cool:
*Spend time in air-conditioned spaces as much as possible.
*If your home doesn't have AC, find a cool location like a library, mall, or cooling center.
*Take cool showers or baths to help regulate your body temperature.
*Use a spray bottle or damp cloth to cool down exposed skin.
*Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing in light colors.

3. Limit Outdoor Activity:
*Reschedule outdoor activities for cooler times of the day, like early morning or evening.
*If you must be outside, find shade and take frequent breaks to cool down.
*Be mindful of the time you spend in the sun and wear sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses.

Dr. Hudson tells us his favorite ice cream flavor is Butter Pecan but that he'd eat any kind of ice cream. Recently, on vacation, he had Huckleberry ice cream and loved it.

Laurajane is a butter pecan fan along with a few other staff members. Other popular flavors in our office were: vanilla, chocolate chip, rocky road, and chocolate.

Getting a single vote each were: cookie dough, cookies/creme, peanut butter/chocolate, strawberry, and neapolitan.

We will be closed on Friday so our staff can participate in training for our new health records system. This new system will allow us to serve you better.

When temperatures climb, the heat can be dangerous. We want you to stay safe!

Stay Hydrated and Limit Time Outdoors
Hydration is key and should begin well before you go outside—ideally, the day before or even a few days prior.

When temperatures are above 90 degrees, it's best to limit outdoor activities. If you do need to be outside, wear loose, lightweight clothing made from breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. And remember: hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

National Call Your Doctor Day falls on the second Tuesday in June as a reminder for young women to schedule their annual Well-Woman Exam. We are asking you to take five minutes out of your day today to take care of your health by scheduling a wellness exam.

Scheduling a wellness exam halfway through the year holds significance because so many women delay their routine care during the winter months. Women overlook the simple phone call that may save their life, often placing the priorities of work, family members, or other obligations before their health. Use National Call You Doctor Day this summer to get a check-up. Once you're done, you have the rest of the summer to enjoy time with your family and friends.

National Call Your Doctor Day is one of the easiest celebration on the calendar. It can set an example for other women, help establish a baseline for many health concerns later in life, and improve opportunities for identifying risk factors. By making the appointment and keeping it, you place a priority on staying healthy so you can continue to meet those important obligations in the future. It only takes a few minutes to commit to this one annual exam. You know people who have made more binding commitments in less time. This is one appointment you will want to keep and mark on the calendar again next year.

There may be an even quicker way to make the appointment than picking up the phone when you have an established relationship with a physician. With many clinics, you can set up an appointment online, quickly and securely. With so many options to schedule a medical appointment, there really isn't a reason why you shouldn't.

NATIONAL FORKLIFT SAFETY DAY | SECOND TUESDAY IN JUNE
The second Tuesday in June recognizes National Forklift Safety Day. Today's National Day provides opportunities for manufacturing, warehouses, logistics, and other industries that rely on forklifts to reassess their forklift training and safety guidelines.

Forklifts are an integral part of industry and commerce around the world. The operators who move products from the warehouse to trucks to the loading dock keep goods moving across the country. Without forklift operators, much of the work needed to move pallets of parts, finished products, and food would be time-consuming and extremely dangerous. Luckily, forklifts do the heavy lifting. But with that heavy lifting, the importance of using safety becomes paramount.

According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), forklift-related injuries have increased since 2011. Training is an important factor in reducing the number of injuries and deaths. The type of forklift, the material being moved, and the facility where they work also impacts the type of training an operator needs. National Forklift Safety Day is a reminder for industries across the country to help improve the safety of every employee, including the forklift operator.

HOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL FORKLIFT SAFETY DAY
Every industry that uses forklifts is encouraged to take part in National Forklift Safety Day. Whether they host seminars or provide opportunities for their operators to recertify and attend seminars, this day is about ensuring a safe and efficient atmosphere. There are several ways to participate across the country:

Review your training schedules and protocols for forklift drivers.
Ensure all operators are current in their training certifications.
Review and update equipment safety check guidelines.
Trainers, maintain your training, too. Operators should be learning from trainers who have the most current knowledge and understanding of a company's protocols.
Attend webinars that share the latest in safety equipment and standards.

It's National Public Health Week. We celebrate those who've chosen to serve in this field.

National Public Health Week is observed during the first week of April and takes place from April 7 to 13 this week. That’s seven days to champion the health of all Americans. It’s a week to recognize that everyone should lead healthier lives, irrespective of where they live, work, or come from.

Since its founding in 1955, the initiative has become an important movement to highlight issues that can improve the health and happiness of a nation. You could choose to crush a workout or any workout challenge today. It’s a great week to start eating healthy and stick to it. Whatever you do, remember to involve your friends, family, and the larger community.

Marijuana users under age 50 are six times more likely to have a heart attack, study finds

A new study found that people under the age of 50 who use marijuana are six times more likely to have a heart attack and four times more likely to have a stroke compared to non-users.

The study, which was published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, surveyed more than 4.6 million people under the age of 50 who had no health conditions associated with cardiovascular risks.

This study points out that it is still unclear how marijuana affects the cardiovascular system. Researchers believe it affects heart rhythm regulation, heightens oxygen demand in the heart muscle, and makes it harder for blood vessels to relax and expand, interrupting blood flow.

The study indicated that the risk of heart attack peaked about one hour after marijuana consumption. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention previously reported similar findings.

March 16-22 is National Poison Prevention Week:

The leading cause of poisoning is drug overdoses; other causes include inadvertent drug or chemical ingestion and exposure to environmental substances.

Opioid Overdoses
Acute opioid poisonings, also known as opioid overdoses, are at all all-time high. Preliminary 2022, estimates indicate that 100,105 people died from preventable drug overdoses – an increase of 797% since 1999. These deaths represent 92% of the total 108,490 drug overdose deaths in the United States, according to Injury Facts.

Many Americans have been directly impacted by the opioid crisis. Either they know someone who has an opioid use disorder, know someone who has died from an overdose or they have an opioid use disorder themselves. The National Safety Council is committed to ending this epidemic. Join us on our mission to save lives.

Drugs at Work
The opioid crisis impacts a workplace’s bottom line, safety and employee health and wellness.

Seventy-five percent of employers have been directly impacted by opioids in the workplace, according to an NSC poll. Employees who are prescribed prescription opioids may be at risk for opioid impairment in the workplace or developing an opioid use disorder. The workplace is a key environment for reaching employees, families and communities to help prevent further opioid misuse, addiction and overdose.

Minimizing opioids’ impact on the workplace is everyone’s job. Buy-in from leadership, effective policies and procedures, education and awareness, and compassion are all crucial. NSC resources are available for leaders, HR managers, safety professionals, supervisors and employees to minimize the impact, protect employees and keep workplaces safe.

On this National Nap Day, Dr. Toney Hudson is a big fan of an afternoon nap. He recommends no longer than 20 minutes.

Napping has many benefits, including improved alertness, decreased stress, and improved mood.

Remember, Dr. Hudson says no more than 20 minutes as you may affect your nighttime sleep and wake up groggy from your nap.

Today (2/21/25) is National Caregivers Day and we salute those caring for others!!!

HISTORY:
Caregivers really go the extra mile in providing the essentials and necessities, from medical aid to personal grooming. Despite this, they are under-appreciated and often underpaid, or not paid at all. For this reason, the Providers Association for Home Health & Hospice Agencies, PAHHHA, established the third Friday in February as National Caregivers Day in 2015. They aimed to dedicate a day annually to recognize and appreciate caregivers everywhere. PAHHHA also provides resources that enable others to extend gratitude to the caregivers in their lives. The first celebration of the holiday took place in 2016.

According to a report by the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, caregivers spend six days in a month grooming, feeding, dressing, bathing, and walking, 13 days a month commuting, cleaning, doing the laundry, monitoring medication, shopping, and cooking special meals for their patient. Furthermore, 13 hours a month are spent coordinating visits with physicians, researching symptoms and diseases, and managing finances.

The National Alliance for Caregiving and American Association of Retired Persons reports that, in 2020, an estimated 53 million caregivers in the U.S. cared for an adult or child without getting paid for it. While most caregivers tend to one adult, approximately 15% look after two adults, and 3% care for three or more adults. The Institute on Aging reports that over ¾ of caregivers are female who spend 50% more time providing essential services than males.

But who will care for the caregivers? What’s surprising is that many caregivers are elders themselves, and the number of hours they spend caregiving only increases with time. The average age of caregivers looking after a person 65 years or older is 63 years old! Many of them report having poor health themselves.

We think the special kindness and patience of caregivers should be celebrated year-round. Their importance is especially honored on National Caregivers Day when we should be there for them just as they are there for our loved ones.

Presidents Day originated in the 1880s when George Washington's birthday was celebrated as a federal holiday.

In 1968, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Bill. The bill moved several federal holidays to Mondays creating three-day weekends. During the debate on the bill, one proposal suggested George Washington’s birthday be renamed Presidents Day to honor the birthdays of both George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Washington’s birthday is February 22nd and Lincoln’s birthday is February 12th. Although Abraham Lincoln’s birthday was celebrated in many states, it was never an official federal holiday.

Following much discussion, Congress rejected the name change.

Despite the rejection, soon after the bill went into effect in 1971, and the observance of Washington's birthday shifted to the third Monday in February, gradually Presidents Day became the commonly accepted name. Over time, the observance came to be known to many as a day to honor both Washington and Lincoln. However, today another shift has occurred and many see the day as a celebration of all the U.S. Presidents.

National 'What Day Is It' for February 10th.

We often associate the month of February with hearts because of Valentine’s Day. However, there's another reason we should think of hearts in February – it is American Heart Month, a designated time to advocate for cardiovascular health and raise awareness about heart disease.

DID YOU KNOW that someone dies every 34 seconds in America due to heart disease, a leading cause of death in the US since 1950.

Some simple tips for taking care of your heart.

#1. Maintain a healthy diet by drinking at least 64 oz of water daily and avoiding sugary beverages.
#2. Understand warning signs/symptoms of heart attacks. Things like discomfort in your chest and upper body, shortness of breath, cold sweat, nausea, or lightheadedness.
#3. Stay up to date on your cholesterol numbers. Get them checked regularly and have a primary care provider help you stay in range.
#4. Know your family's heart history, as you can work to reduce your risks if you know which family members had heart disease.

Nine nursing students of the Emory & Henry University School of Health Sciences took the pledge to provide ethical and compassionate care as nurses during the annual white coat ceremony.

The ceremony was held on Friday, January 27, 2025 at the Kennedy~Reedy Theatre inside the McGlothlin Center for the Arts on the main Emory & Henry campus in Emory, Va. Those in attendance were University leadership, esteemed School of Health Sciences faculty, and supportive family members and friends. Those who could not attend in person had an option to join in virtually via a livestream on the Emory & Henry YouTube channel.

The ceremony’s keynote speaker was Trista Ruff, the Associate Administrator and Chief Nursing Officer of Ballad Health. “The journey into the nursing profession is not only about gaining the skills and knowledge that you need but it is a personal transformation,” Ruff stated to the nursing students in attendance.

The nursing students of the class of 2027 are Joy Lynn Back, Serenity Faith Eaton, Mary Madison Graham, Lauren Olivia Hudson, Mallory Isabelle Porter, Ava Puskas, Madeline Simmons, Sydney Stanley and Maria Ester Gomes de Oliveira Wilson.

“There’s important symbolism in the white coat ceremony,” said Dr. Michael Puglisi, Provost of Emory & Henry University. “In higher education, we have many symbols to mark milestones in students’ progress. This is a right of passage for our future nurses. The ceremony marks a symbolic start of their professional path.”

Emory & Henry’s current nursing program began in 2021. The institution’s nursing graduates contribute to the regional healthcare sector of Southwest Virginia and surrounding areas in Middle Appalachia. Emory & Henry offers two path options to a Bachelor of Science in nursing. A pre-licensure program combines a liberal arts foundation on the main Emory campus with nursing-centric courses completed on the University’s Health Sciences campus in Marion, Va. The University also offers an online BSN completion program for students who are licensed as registered nurses.

We are deeply saddened by the tragic collision in Washington, D.C., involving an American Airlines passenger jet and an Army Blackhawk helicopter. Our prayers are with the victims and their loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.

Holding a grudge and harboring unforgiveness primarily harms the person holding onto those feelings, as it can negatively impact their mental and physical health by causing stress, anxiety, and even physical symptoms like increased blood pressure while doing little to affect the person they are angry with; essentially, "drinking poison and expecting the other person to get sick."

BIG thanks to all who served our country!!

Veterans Day personal story:

Dr. Hudson's father, Adonal Hudson, was a veteran of WW2 serving in an Army Air Force unit on a B17 bomber.

On June 11, 1944 (5 days after D Day) they met heavy resistance from the Germans while on mission behind the Normandy beachhead.

Over the English Channel, Hudson was blown out of the plane and was able to pull his parachute cord despite being badly injured with a shattered right shoulder.

Hudson remained afloat in the English Channel for many hours losing much blood and suffering from hypothermia.

Hudson was finally picked up by an English ship where he found out all of his bomber mates perished when their B17 Flying Fortress crashed into the Channel. Their bodies were never recovered.
